Independent and mainstream music has inspired heated discussion but it appears that the two represent different sides of the same coin, namely the ancient battle between the presumably “authentic” nature of the music and the disdain that enthusiasts show for “pop.”
But what distinguishes them?
Mainstream music is driven by large record labels which advertise budding stars via their huge distribution networks. On the other hand, as the name implies, independent music is led by independent artists.
In quality, independent music is seen as the best new music in Maine, with more artistic freedom, individual flair, unconventional ideas and visions, and mainstream music appears to contribute to forced trends for the sole purpose of selling. However, that doesn’t mean that mainstream is complete trash. Perhaps the strongest argument for it is that it is universal. Unlike some underground music genres (ambient, alternative and indie, to name a few), there is no limited audience. The music itself is fun and attractive. But this is because it has been carefully designed to appeal to a target audience.
Some people might argue that mainstream music has no sensations or sincerity and the only reason it even exists is that the record label can generate profits. And it’s not wrong. In the case of the mainstream, a lyric piece would hardly ever give you awe. Mostly, young talents speak rubbish only in their songs, which no one wants their children to hear. Moreover, almost all new and creative genres have been adopted by the major players, who constantly push out the last cents of the new talents.
The question is: why do people not be as involved as mainstream in the independent music culture? Because not many people are in the loop of independent music beyond what the mainstream offers.
Although the low profile practises in the industry have not changed, there has always been opposition and as a result, many artists such as Deep Gold have been exploring on the side. Due to the universally attractive music of Deep Gold, people gradually become more conscious of “authentic” music. In all sincerity, apart from some fancy, meaningless stupidity, a good piece of music is not that hard to tell.
